Q: What is Mirage EAE (Embedded Archive Engine)?

A: In the foreground, system applications view and operate a Mirage based VTL as a conventional tape library.  In the background, the Mirage VTC “Embedded Archive Engine” (EAE) utilizes archival tape drive(s), autoloader(s) or tape library(s) for archiving virtual tape volumes to conventional tape cartridges in a standard tape format for data interchange and disaster recovery requirements.  The archival process is initiated and managed by the Mirage EAE without any additional software or host resources.  Two distinct archival methods are offered to meet your backup and disaster recovery requirements:
  Selective Archive
  • Designed for applications requiring archival of some tape volumes, not all
  • Backups & restores are performed to/from the virtual tape library
  • Archives from virtual tape library to physical tape cartridges based on user selection
  Auto Archive
  • Designed for applications requiring archival of all tape volumes
  • Backups & restores are performed to/from the virtual tape library
  • Archives all virtual tape volumes to physical tape media cartridges automatically

Q: Seamless Scalability?

A: Ultera's Striper Series, Reflection Series and OpticalRAID Series controller's operate one or more removable media data storage devices or libraries as an enhanced logical device using RAID.

  • In a Single Library or Multiple Library application, multiple Ultera controllers can be added to virtualize each additional logical drive set.
  • Scalability is also achieved by adding multiple ranks of drives attached to a single controller.
  • A rank of drives, one drive per array controller channel, is operated as a single logical drive set.
  • Multiple ranks of drives are supported as long as the combined performance of each rank does not exceed the bandwidth or sustained speed of the host interface connection.  For relatively slow devices, such as optical DVD-RAM and MO drives, multiple ranks of logical drive sets are operated at full speed.
  • Cascading multiple Striper Series & Reflection Series controllers provides seamless scalability for mixed striping or mirroring solutions; Cascading multiple OpticalRAID Series controllers provides increased speed for video streaming/editing applications.
